Information Technology Careers
The world continues to rely more and more on technology and the pace of technology’s impact on business has not slowed. The technology industry is still flourishing and offers a wide and lucrative variety of options for those with the relevant skills and, more increasingly, qualifications.
Workforce size
- Software and Applications Programmers (97,800)
- ICT Managers (58,400)
- ICT Support Technicians (50,500)
Employment rate
- ICT Support Technicians: Over the past 5 years the number of jobs has stayed about the same but strong growth is expected in the future. New jobs and turnover occur from workers leaving the profession.
- This may create up to 50,000 job before 2020.
- Very strong growth is expected in the future.
- Unemployment rate is ‘Below Average’ or ‘Average’ (good news for workers)

- Job entrants in IT mainly work in: Professional, Scientific and Technical Services; Information Media and Telecommunications; and Public Administration and Safety.
- Almost all work full-time.
- Full-time workers, on average, work 41.0 hours per week (compared to the all jobs average of 40 hours).
