Student Q&A: Susan Taylor

Business Faculty Student - Logistics

Editor's note: Upskilled no longer offers courses in logistics. Please contact us on 1300 009 924 to discuss other course options.

Being a seasoned professional in the logistics industry for over ten years, Susan Taylor was determined to complete the TLI50415 - Diploma of Logistics as a way for her to learn the current practices in logistics and how they impact the industry.

In this Q&A, she shares more about what subjects she found beneficial from the diploma, how she balanced work with study and tips for future students interested in the course.

Could you tell us why you chose to study the TLI50415 - Diploma of Logistics?

I chose to study the TLI50415 - Diploma of Logistics because I wanted to add to my work experience with new and accurate practices in all areas of logistics. I have worked in logistics for over ten years but I wanted a more precise and updated way in carrying out all facets of logistics. This course will give me a better chance of improving my future career goals.

In addition, I wanted to show prospective employers that I have extensive experience, coupled with a qualification highlighting the latest practices in logistics. I believe this is what’s required in today’s changing workplace.

Could you give us a brief description of your current role and how this course has helped you?

I am currently looking for work. I’m hoping the specific subjects I’ve studied will improve my chances of securing employment at a higher level. I have had two different roles over the past ten years and the TLI50415 - Diploma of Logistics has helped expand my knowledge in the industry.

The following subjects of the course were ones I found most beneficial:

  • Environmental protection policies and managing risk: the subject matter was very accurate and helpful.
  • Develop a transport and logistics business plan: operational plans are imperative in logistics and this subject would have certainly helped me in my previous roles.

What skills have you gained (or improved on) since completing this course?

The main skills I have improved on are:

  • Team performance.
  • Management plans.
  • Personal development.
  • Undertaking project work.

These were very important and presented well in the diploma.  As an aspiring manager, being able to perfect these subjects was imperative.

How did you balance work with online study?

Balancing full-time work and study was difficult at times and did result in me taking longer to finish the diploma. I was able to study full-time for the final two months and complete my diploma.

When I was able to dedicate straight hours of study, it was easier to understand and complete my studies. The fact that I never had any issues accessing the site any time of day or night was excellent in completing this course.

What aspects of the course did you enjoy and why?

I enjoyed gaining information from the Powerpoint presentations for nearly every subject and the access to additional learning materials if required. The information provided was precise and detailed and in most cases, allowed me to complete the questions, case studies and projects.

What impact does logistics have in our everyday lives?

I believe logistics has a large impact in our everyday lives. From the way we commute to the way any business we’re working for or dealing with operates.

Logistics in some ways is the hidden and quite unnoticed part of life, allowing us to get to places and having access to services that allow businesses and individuals to function.

Any advice you would like to give to students who decide to study this course?

To utilise your trainer and Facebook groups for any guidance or assistance. I actually never joined the Upskilled Facebook groups during my studies but it is a good opportunity to get new ideas from others.

The trainers are also very knowledgeable and happy to help. I feel that if you are undertaking a diploma and you have little to no experience or knowledge, it would be a good idea to utilise the Facebook groups and the trainer as much as you need.
