Student Q&A: Lisa Fischer

Could you tell us why you chose to study the CHC62015 - Advanced Diploma in Community Sector Management?
I chose to study the CHC62015 - Advanced Diploma of Community Sector Management since l am currently working in the area, and this has been a qualification of choice for my current employer.
My previous qualifications are more disability-specific, and having a more rounded qualification would give me the tools I need if l wish to explore avenues other than management in the disability field in the future.
Could you give us a brief description of your current role and how this course has helped you?
I am currently a Manager in the area of disability for a Government department. My employer has added this qualification to its list of mandatory qualifications at this position level.
What skills have you gained from completing the Advanced Diploma?
I have gained skills in the more complex and management areas of culture, diversity, and performance management. Learning to retrain myself to look at situations and solutions from a different perspective has also been an insightful opportunity for me to improve on the job.
How did you balance work with online study?
I think it takes time, dedication and 100% effort. After a couple of months of settling in and getting used to the extra workload, I set aside some time on certain days and weekends to ensure l would complete each module in a timely manner.
What aspects of the course did you enjoy and why?
I enjoyed most parts of the course, but especially liked the area around cultural diversity.
What do you believe are important skills to have in Community Sector Management?
As I said earlier, I think it is very important to be aware of different cultures in our community, and remember that we all have different cultural beliefs and values.
Since completing the course, what other benefits can future students find when undertaking the Advanced Diploma?
I think there is a lot to learn and take away from the workplace. Most of the assessments l could relate directly back to my current position, which helped me make sense of each question and scenario.
